PAGE ONE of TWO
A fraction is one or more items that are separated into pieces or groups.
Fractions can tell us how many items we have in total, and how many in that group are different from the other items in that same group.
Maybe you cut one whole pizza into two slices.
You keep one half and your friend gets the other half of the pizza.
Those slices are fractions of the whole pizza.
Here is an example of a fraction:
“1” is a part of the pizza, and “2” is the total of all the parts of the pizza.
In our story, you and your friend each have half of the pizza.
As a fraction you would write that number like this:
The top number is the selected part or parts ( 1 ). Now draw a line under that number ( 1 ). To finish, write the total number of parts or sections under that line ( 2 ).
If you are writing a fraction on a computer or tablet, you could write the fraction as 1/2.
Instead of the numbers top and bottom with the line in the middle, you would write the top number first, then a slanted / line, followed by the bottom number of your fraction.
This “sideways” number may be easier to read on paper.
You will see that tablets and computers usually display a fraction with numbers side by side with the slanted line.
You may also write the fraction in letters, like One Half, or One Third.
On this website you will see fractions written “sideways” like 1/2 or written in words:
One Half
One Third
One Quarter
When you say the number out loud, you say the top number first and then the bottom number.
Many people put a - between written fraction numbers. This would look like one-quarter, one-half. and three-fourths. The - helps to show the numbers belong together. Ask your school teacher, mom, or tutor.
The top number of a fraction is not always 1.
We cut our pizza into four slices. You ate three (3) slices of the pizza.
In fractions you would say you ate 3/4 of the pizza.
Or, You ate three-fourths of the pizza.
You ate three slices, and you left one slice for your mom.
Three slices and one slice equals four slices.
3/4 is a larger number than 1/4.
You:1/4 + 1/4 + 1/4 = 3/4.
Mom: 1/4 = 1/4.
Before we get too hungry, fractions are not just for circles, or pizzas.
Fractions can be found in many shapes, or even with groups of items.
Above you will see the top (or first) number in a fraction is how many of the parts you are counting.
The bottom (or second) number in a fraction is the total of all parts or items.
